There's a verse in John's first letter that cuts through centuries of confusion with startling clarity:
"By this you know the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God, and every spirit that does not confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is not of God. And this is the spirit of the Antichrist." (1 John 4:2-3, NKJV)
John isn't asking us to master complex theology here. He's giving us a simple, clear test — one we can apply to any teaching, any book, any preacher, any spiritual voice that comes our way.
Does it confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh and is of God?
If yes, it is of God. If no, it is the spirit of antichrist. Period.
This sure makes things simple. If anyone — any church, any teacher, any publication, any program — is teaching anything except that Jesus the Christ has come in the flesh and is of God, that voice is speaking through a spirit of antichrist. Not mostly right with a few problems. Not well-intentioned but mistaken. Antichrist.
And here's the encouragement John gives us immediately after: "You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world." (1 John 4:4, NKJV)
You have already overcome. Not because you're strong enough or smart enough to detect every deception on your own — but because He who is in you is greater. The Holy Spirit within you bears witness to truth. When you hear the gospel preached purely, something in you recognizes it. When you hear falsehood dressed up in spiritual language, something in you hesitates.
Trust that hesitation. It's the Spirit of God protecting you.
John wraps up his first letter with one simple instruction: "Little children, keep yourselves from idols." If you know who the one true God is, hold fast to the truth. Don't wander after voices that deny the Son. Don't make room in your heart for teachings that sound spiritual but reject Jesus as Lord.
We live in a world drowning in spiritual noise. Podcasts, videos, bestselling books, celebrity pastors, ancient mysticism repackaged for modern seekers — all of it competing for our attention and trust. John's test is as relevant today as it was two thousand years ago.
Does it confess Jesus Christ — fully God, fully man, come in the flesh to save us? Then listen. Does it deny Him, diminish Him, or replace Him with something else? Then turn away.
The test is simple. The stakes are eternal.
I encourage you today: apply John's test to everything you're hearing and reading. Not out of fear, but out of love for truth. God has given you His Spirit to guide you. Trust Him. Hold fast to Jesus. Keep yourself from idols.
