There's a verse in Isaiah that stopped me in my tracks the first time I truly saw it: "Truly You are God, who hide Yourself, O God of Israel, the Savior!" (Isaiah 45:15, NKJV).
A God who hides Himself? That seemed strange to me at first. Why would God hide? Doesn't He want us to find Him?
But the more I sat with this, the more I began to understand something beautiful. God doesn't hide to keep us away. He hides to draw us closer.
Think about a child playing hide and seek. The parent doesn't hide to lose the child forever — they hide so the child will come looking. And when that little one finally finds them, there's joy in both hearts. The seeking made the finding sweeter.
God invites us into the same kind of search. Not a search of desperation, but a search of relationship. He reveals Himself through His Word, through His creation, through the life of Jesus — but He doesn't force Himself on us. He waits for us to seek Him with our whole heart.
Jeremiah 29:13 promises us: "And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart."
I've found this to be true in my own walk. The times when I felt most distant from God — when He seemed hidden — were often the times when I was going through the motions without truly seeking Him. But when I opened His Word with a hungry heart, when I came to Him honestly in prayer, He was always there. He had never left. I had just stopped looking.
The God who hides is also the God who seeks. Jesus tells us in Luke 19:10 that "the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost." He pursues us even while inviting us to pursue Him.
This is the mystery and the mercy of our faith. God is not distant because He wants to be unknown. He is near to all who call upon Him in truth. But He asks something of us — that we would seek Him, not casually, but earnestly. Not out of obligation, but out of love.
Where are you seeking God today? Are you going through the motions, or are you pressing in with your whole heart? He promises that if we seek Him, we will find Him. And when we do, we discover He was there all along, waiting for us with joy.
