Why would God love sinners?
It's a question that stops us in our tracks, isn't it? Because if we're honest, we know what we deserve. We know the gap between who God is and who we are.
But here's what changes everything: "God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8, NKJV).
Let me say that again — *while we were still sinners*. Not after we cleaned ourselves up. Not after we proved ourselves worthy. Not after we earned it. While we were still in our sin, Christ died for us.
The Love We Can't Explain
I've spent most of the last 40 years studying Scripture, and I still can't fully explain this love. It doesn't work like human love. Human love is conditional — we love those who love us back, who treat us well, who deserve it. But God's love? It's completely different.
"For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life" (John 3:16, NKJV). The world — that means all of us. Not the good people. Not the religious people. The world, full of sinners.
God loves sinners because that's who we are. All of us. "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23, NKJV). There's not a single person who can stand before God and claim they deserve His love. Not one.
What This Love Cost
But here's what breaks my heart and fills it with hope at the same time: God's love for sinners cost Him everything.
He didn't just feel sorry for us from a distance. He didn't just offer us good advice or a second chance. He sent His Son to become one of us, to live among us, to suffer and die in our place. "For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him" (2 Corinthians 5:21, NKJV).
Jesus — who never sinned, who didn't deserve death — took our place. That's how much God loves sinners. That's how much He loves you.
The Only Response That Makes Sense
So why does God love sinners? Because love is who He is. "God is love" (1 John 4:8, NKJV). It's not just something He does — it's His very nature.
And because of that love, we who were dead in our sins have been made alive. We who were enemies have been brought near. We who were lost have been found.
The question isn't really why God loves sinners. The question is: what will we do with a love like that?
I encourage you to sit with Romans 5:8 today. Read it slowly. Let it sink in. While you were still a sinner, Christ died for you. That's not theory. That's not religious language. That's the truth that changes everything.
